The next Aha! Moment: How to give an authentic Acknowledgement of Country
Today, many organisations, businesses and schools are implementing Acknowledgements of Country (AoC) - but not many people know why and few know how to go beyond the standard script. When Acknowledgement of Country becomes a token part of proceedings it defeats the purpose of what AoC’s are meant to represent in the first place.
Join us as Rhys Paddick and Emma Gibbens explore what it takes to deliver a genuine and meaningful Acknowledgement of Country. Acknowledge this! Is about going beyond the words
and beyond the fear of getting it wrong to acknowledge country like you mean it.
Introducing our speakers:
Rhys Paddick
Rhys is an advocate of cultural leadership and the development of sound educational and raining programs. Working in environments that can and do create holistic, healthy and substantial changes, Rhys has have over time witnessed many positive outcomes, primarily within the domain of Indigenous education. Rhys's career and long term networks began with educational, supportive and mentoring programs of Aboriginal koolingars (kids), in both primary and secondary schools. His focus is to now bring a modern adaptation of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture into the wider Australian forum in an effort to connect Australians with our common culture – people culture.
Emma Gibbens
Emma inspires people to take action and have meaningful conversations through training, speaking and grassroots organising. She has managed political and advocacy campaigns across the US and around the world for over ten years, specialising in grassroots campaign
strategies. Emma has worked with Presidents and Premiers, academics and global experts, to elicit the core values and ideas organisations want to communicate. Emma’s method asks questions that lead to meaningful conversations and greater understanding. She is currently applying her abilities with these organisations: Town Team Movement, The Museum of Freedom and Tolerance and as a Curator at TEDxPerth.
